Eye Care in Focus Annual Conference 2025

The ICO is delighted to announce that the Eye Care in Focus 2025 conference will take place on Wednesday, 1st October at The Gibson Hotel in Dublin.

The meeting, now in it's 4th consecutive year, is a 1-day clinical education conference for the extended eye care team (ophthalmologists, orthoptists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, technician and opticians) working across the public and private healthcare system.

Key discussions will include: 

  • Myopia Professor Ian Flitcroft, Ophthalmologist and a leading authority on the aetiology and management of Myopia, will discuss the latest clinical and scientific updates alongside Dr Michael Moore, School of Physics and Clinical and Optometric Sciences, Technological University Dublin.

  • Expanding the Role of the Multi-disciplinary Team Dr Angela Knox, Ophthalmologist at Belfast Trust, will be among a panel of speakers from across the eye care multi-disciplinary team who will highlight examples of team delivered care and the opportunities for further development.

  • Planning for the Future of Orthoptics in Ireland Ms Sarah Spain, Senior Orthoptist, Health and Social Care Professions (HSCP) Lead for the National Clinical Programme for Ophthalmology will outline her findings on the challenges associated with the training, recruitment and retention of orthoptists in the Irish health care services and the way forward.  

  • Case Based Discussion Chaired by Dr Karen Curtin, Ophthalmologist.  Dr Curtin will present on a range of real life patient cases and discuss the best treatment and management option, with audience participation encouraged.

  • 'Eyes on Tomorrow' Live Podcast Hosts Dr John Ferris, Ophthalmologist and Dermot Keogh, Optometrist, will record a live episode of the 'Eyes on Tomorrow' podcast. John and Dermot will be in conversation with pioneering Irish Cataract and Refractive Surgeon, Mr Patrick Condon.  Mr Condon performed the first IOL implantation in Ireland in the 1970s and was a forerunner in bringing the phacoemulsification technique to Ireland.  He will talk about his medical career and also the responsibility of eye care professionals on a number of far ranging issues including prevention, early diagnosis and how healthcare is organised and delivered.
