Professor Peter Barry Memorial Lecture

Venue: Education and Conference Centre, Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin
Time: 5.30pm - 6.30pm
Primary Retinal Detachment Outcome (PRO) Study
Professor Ed Ryan
St Paul, Minnesota and Retina Consultants of Minnesota, USA
Professor Ed Ryan was the driver behind the Primary Retinal Detachment Outcome (PRO) US multicentre study and lead author of the PRO reports in 2020 that largely matched BEAVRS database study data.
Retinal detachment (RD) while uncommon is a time sensitive eye emergency and outcomes depend on lens status, type of retinal break and timely access to surgery. The PRO study showed that SB was better in superior phakic RDs but access may be limited by inexperienced SB surgeons choosing vitrectomy. SB is declining in use for multiple reasons including lower reimbursement, longer theatre time and less exposure during fellowship training. However SB retains an important role and courses are essential to save this technique.
The lecture will follow the 3rd BEAVRS Scleral Buckle (SB) course held at the same venue earlier that day. Prof. Ryan will join local faculty sharing his experience as an American Academy of Ophthalmology SB course instructor.

The annual Professor Peter Barry Lecture is in honour of our esteemed colleague, the late Professor Peter Barry, whose contribution to ophthalmology here in Ireland and abroad was immense. Professor Barry was an especially wonderful mentor to young ophthalmologists and this lecture is a tribute to his legacy within the specialty.
